About

The following is a profile of artist Mike Hutchinson.
Born in the North West of England and resident there for most of my life. During my youth I routinely witnessed steam trains plying their trade around the industrial heartlands. Having always been interested in art and engineering and because of familiarity it was perhaps natural that during my youth railways were my original choice of subject to paint. I was particularly inspired by the work of Terence Cuneo who at the time produced superb railway art, much of which was widely used on railway posters. On entering the aircraft industry after leaving school, my artistic interest diverged to also encompass aircraft subjects and later road vehicles and I now specialise in the representation portrayal of road, rail and air scenes in oil on canvas. Having not had any formal art training I have relied on learning by practice, reading and the analysis of the fine artwork produced by the many masters in their chosen fields for my continued improvement.
I am a Chartered Engineer by profession who has spent most of his working life in the Aircraft and Nuclear industries and I believe the engineering discipline instilled knowledge essential to the convincing portrayal of solid mechanical objects.
I am an Associate Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists and regularly exhibit in their annual Aviation Paintings of the Year exhibitions at the Mall Gallery, London. I am also a member of the Manchester Aviation Art Society and have examples of my aviation art on display in a periodically changing group exhibition at their Barton Airport base.
Some examples of my transport art are regularly displayed at the Fine Art and Frames gallery of St Annes on Sea, Lancashire.
My work has been exhibited in individual and shared exhibitions at various venues around the North West of England. I have produced paintings to commission for clients throughout the UK, North America and South Africa. Bucentaur Gallery have used my images on Greetings cards.
